Earlier in this series I posted about books from my shelf of small books (to be read). This post covers the rest of the current shelf of small books.
The Logos imprint was put out by Regnery. (Side note: I just read that Regnery has been sold to…Hachette? No. Actually to Skyhorse, with which I was familiar through RFK, Jr’s The Real Anthony Fauci, guaranteed to raise your blood pressure while depressing your spirits.) Whether or not the sale is a good thing remains to be seen. Regnery was a reliably conservative publisher. Basic Verities (Chicago: Regnery, 1965, pb, French/English) by Charles Peguy contains both poetry and prose. Back in print from Cluny. What Catholics Believe by JosephPieper and Heinz Raskop (Chicago: Regnery, 1966, pb, 1951 imprimatur). After an introduction there is a prayer to St. Thomas Aquinas to help the reader learn from the text. Also back in print from Cluny.
Canterbury Books was an imprint of Sheed & Ward and were excerpted from longer works. First, The Authenticity of the Gospels by Maisie Ward (NY: Sheed & Ward, 1956, pb, 1955 imprimatur). Chapters on the Gospels as a whole, plus individual ones on the authors, history, etc. Link to the book on Internet Archive. Then, The Bible in the Church by Bruce Vawter C.M. (NY: Sheed & Ward, 1959, pb, 1958 imprimatur). Three chapters: “Who Closed the Open Bible?”; “The Rule of Faith”; and, “The Bible in the Church.” Link on internet archive.
Two from Image: Our Lady of Fatima by William Thomas Walsh (Garden City, NY: Image, 1954, pb, 1947 Cdl. Spellman imprimatur). A thorough investigation (up to that time) into the apparitions, etc.; Saints for Sinners by Alban Goodier, SJ (Garden City, NY: Image, 1960, pb). From the back cover: “This is a collection of [nine] sensitively drawn prose portraits of human beings whose temptations, flaws, struggles and failures bear striking similarity to the weaknesses and defects experienced in this modern era.” Back in print with Sophia.
The Secret of Mary by Saint Louis De Montfort (Bay Shore, NY: The Montfort Publications, 1950, pb, 1947 imprimatur). In print now with TAN. The Crusade of Fatima by John De Marchi, IMC (Coimbra, Portugal: 1964, pb, 1947 imprimatur). Here. Mother of Christ Crusade by John De Marchi IMC (Billings, MT: Mother of Christ Crusade, n.d., pb, 1947 imprimatur). Kindle version here.
This one’s pretty well-known: The Intellectual Life: Its Spirit, Conditions, Methods by A.D. Sertillanges, OP (Westminster, MD: Newman, 1962, pb, 1946 imprimatur). Theoretical and practical helps for the work of the mind. In print in 1992 from CUA Press.
This final one is a bit of a mystery. It’s cloth-bound, 5 and 3/4” x 4”; 108 pp. No date. No author. Here is some info from Google.
